The Great Lost Bear is a Portland institution, a beloved brewpub known for its relaxed atmosphere, eclectic decor, and expansive menu of hearty, made-from-scratch comfort food. Founded in 1979 by Dave Evans, his wife Weslie, and his cousin Chip MacConnell, the Great Lost Bear transformed from a former rock club into a quirky, inviting pub that Portlanders—and visitors—return to again and again. In the early days, the founders drew inspiration from other classic New England spots, crafting a menu and ambiance that felt like home to the community. The Bear is now a neighborhood favorite and has remained a local legend ever since.
The decor reflects the pub’s character and history, with walls covered in vintage memorabilia, eclectic posters, and colorful artifacts. A taxidermy bear head watches over the bustling dining room, where groups of friends and families gather around tables, soaking in the casual, welcoming vibe.
